When is the Best Time To Post on Facebook, Twitter and Pinter
So the big question of today is, what is the best time to post on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc? The answer alone depends on a lot many factors, and this is where your social media analytics come in. But before you run off to look at your Facebook Page Insights, here is some advice for some specific social networks.
One of the most important social media tricks I've learnt over time is to maintain a schedule. Not only will it bring consistency to your work, but will also save you valuable time. But sharing stories according to a schedule itself won't give you much of an edge, unless you know when exactly to share them. So it's not just a matter of doing some work; it's a question of when to do it. Knowing when your audience wakes up and checks Facebook can work wonders for your social reputation.
So the big question of today is, what is the best time to post on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc? The answer alone depends on a lot many factors, and this is where your social media analytics come in. But before you run off to look at your Facebook Page Insights, here is some advice for some specific social networks.
As I said, social media analytics can help. But it's not enough to just know when, and how many of your visitors are online. A far better metric would be when the audience is engaging, i.e. clicking, liking, sharing or even emailing stories. This is where insights from some of the largest sharing platforms come in. AddThis, one of the most popular such platforms, can help.
Timings varies for various social networks
AddThis has compiled a report from more than 14 Million websites that use their tools, and has come up with insights of their own that can help.

This data reflects the peak click and share times for more than 14 Million sites that use AddThis tools. And I must say it somewhat confirms our own observations for Facebook and Twitter accounts for our various sister blogs.
The figure above represents our Facebook user activity (percentage) against hours of the day. This data is based on time in the GMT +5 timezone, whereas the time in the data from AddThis is at GMT -4. But both indicate that most of the activity on Facebook occurs during the night. Very few shares happen during the day (for the India/Pakistan region), but they peak around 6-12 PM. Some clicks and shares also happen during daytime. People usually engage during the starting office hours, and in the evening when they get back home.
According to AddThis, Twitter shares the same trend as Facebook. Both these networks are predominantly used in the day time and evening. But Pinterest is mostly used in the evening and night.
Social media usage apparently depends on the day of the week as well. Here is another insightful observation from AddThis.

Takeaway
Of course your actual target audience might not behave the same way. Maybe you're running a job board, and people engage with your posts more in the morning. Or maybe you're all about gaming, and your gaming audience becomes active after midnight. It all depends. But looking at this data, it makes sense to formulate various content strategies based on data from your own account.
For example, you can share stuff in the morning that office-goers can relate to. But keep the best of your content for the evening or night, when most of your audience is engaging. You should also look into what days are most popular for your posts. If you’re posting your content across social networks, maximize engagement by posting on the peak day and time of those networks.
As much as data can be useful, don’t forget to think about the human aspect of sharing. Think about your own behaviors and habits on social networks. When are you most likely to share content and using what social media network? When do you have breaks at work? What social network do you find yourself scrolling through when watching TV at night? Chances are, your audience’s behaviors may not be that far off from yours.
Twitter Building Timeline Design Similar To Facebook News
Twitter has recently announced that it is working on some changes on users' homepage streams, and replacing the real-time updates with an algorithmically-controlled timeline not unlike the one you see on Facebook
If you are one of those Twitter users who stick around because of its simplicity and sense of urgency, then your days of enjoying Twitter are probably at an end. Twitter has recently announced that it is working on some changes on users' homepage streams, and replacing the real-time updates with an algorithmically-controlled timeline not unlike the one you see on Facebook. If you run a business, this could mean a new approach for Twitter marketing is in order.
According to the Twitter announcement;
“we’re experimenting with better ways to give you what you come to Twitter for: a snapshot of what’s happening. We can use information like who you follow and what you engage with to surface highlights of what you missed and show those to you as soon as you log back in or come back to the app.
We’re also working on ideas such as an instant, personalized timeline for new users who don’t want to spend time cultivating one on their own.”
A couple of things to note here. First, Twitter will be 'improving' the experience for users by looking at who they follow, and what they interact with, and then using this data to tailor newsfeeds for users. Twitter details plans to surface relevant tweets based on your particular interests, which means you may eventually see tweets from people you don’t even follow.
According to the announcement, the timeline Facebook-like timeline might be only for news users. But frankly speaking, I don't see this happening. If Twitter is going ahead with this new customized timeline idea, then there'll be a ranking algorithm in place and that would naturally apply to all users on Twitter, and not just to new ones since the aim here is to customize the newsfeed and 'improve' the experience.
Is evolution the answer?
Websites and social networks evolve over time. Facebook has come a long way from being a college network to the biggest social platform ever. It is true that social networks like Twitter and G+ also need to evolve, but is this really the answer for Twitter?
Longtime Twitter users have stuck with the network for its real-time updates, and how easily it is to navigate around posts. Everything is arranged chronologically, and this makes it easier to find content and get the latest updates. On the other hand, an algorithm-driven newsfeed such as Facebook's is often irrelevant or repetitive, and it is often hard to find a particular story. This can be off-putting for hardcore Twitter users who use it just to get rid of fancy Facebook algorithms.
The change will be implemented over the next few months. However, it is unclear as to how it will effect businesses and post rankings. But if we were to guess, Twitter would adopt a model similar to Facebook. So if you use Twitter for marketing, now might be a good time to start re-evaluating your marketing strategies.

In a bid to take on Google, Bing has teamed up with Twitter to include the hashtag and handle searches from the social network onto search results
Search is one game Microsoft just won't give up on, even in the face of stern competition and enormous odds. Constantly adding new features, Bing is all gearing up to take on Google. In a fresh announcement, Microsoft has taken its partnership with Twitter further to include more content from the microblogging site on Bing Search. Starting this week, Bing will include the Twitter hashtags and handles searches in its search results.
Hashtag search
Tweets have been showing up on Bing search for quite some time. And you could even embed Tweets on Bing maps. With this new Twitter-Bing integration, users can now perform hashtag searches to find trending topics on social media.
People on Twitter generate millions of tweets every minute - content that can benefit others outside the social network. Granted that not every tweet is useful, but if you combine the popularity of a tweet (i.e. re-tweet/favorite count), its age, and the authority of its creator, you have a recipe for quality content that can be helpful outside Twitter.
So, how do you do a hashtag search on Bing? Simply add a # symbol before your search term while searching on Bing!
Searching for a hashtag then surfaces top results from Twitter in the search results.
Search for Twitter handles
Users can also search for specific Twitter handles, and celebrity-related tweets. This can be done by entering the @ symbol before a username. Bing will deliver a list of matching top Twitter profiles, and include relevant tweets related to the specific Twitter handle in its search results.
Celebrity searches on Bing will also now include the top content from Twitter related to the celebrity.
Bing will start rolling this update for all users in the next week. If you're the lucky one to get it earlier, let us know what you think of these new changes in the comments section below! We'd love to hear from you.

Twitter mobile apps previously allowed users to embed Tweets within Tweets
Twitter mobile apps previously allowed users to embed Tweets within Tweets, a feature that has now been made available for the desktop version as well. And it couldn't be any easier!
Ever felt the need to quote a tweet without having to retweet it or copy-pasting its entire content? You can save quite a bit of character space simply by embedding other tweets within your own. Tweetception, if you will. Twitter mobile apps previously allowed users to embed Tweets within Tweets, a feature that has now been made available for the desktop version as well. And it couldn't be any easier!
Facebook has allowed users a similar feature since ages in the 'Share' functionality. When users on Facebook share a status update from someone, it is a cross between a retweet and an embed in Twitter terms.
Twitter now seems to have gained some lost ground.
When to embed a tweet?
I can think of many reasons why such a feature would be useful. Embedded Tweets actually look a bit like quotations with indentation, while still retaining the integrity of the tweet format. Embedding tweets also is a better approach if your objective is to share without for the sake of itself (since an embed can't be tracked like a retweet).
Retweets also leave you with a limited character space to add your own views. Often, the original tweet has already filled up the 160 character limit, leaving behind nothing. An embed, however, should give you plenty of room to add your own opinion.
Here's what an embedded tweet looks like.
Embedding a tweet within a tweet is very easy. You just type out your tweet, include a link to the tweet you want to embed, and then publish it. The tweet you link to gets automatically embedded into your tweet.
How to get a link to a tweet? This unfortunately requires some extra clicks. Click on the username of the tweet's author, and go to their profile. Find the tweet you're looking for, and click on it. If you arrive on a page that has nothing but a single Tweet on it, you can go ahead and copy the URL of that page - this is the public URL for that Tweet. You can also arrive at this page by clicking on the timestamp on a Tweet. Here's what such a page would look like.
The links aren't immediately clickable, so if someone’s embedded tweet looks interesting you have to click on it to expand it. Twitter’s desktop app, TweetDeck, doesn’t appear to be supporting this feature yet. As of now it’s only available on the iOS and Android apps, and Twitter.com.
Another nice part about this feature is that when you embed someone’s tweet, that person receives a notification. It’s also fun to note that if you embed a tweet with an embedded tweet into another new tweet, they all link together in a chain of tweets.
Have you tried out this feature? Let us know what you think in the comments section below!

The revenue model is based on a Freemium model and you have to pay for access to more of their services. But if you're a beginner, this is where you should start off.

Twitter has introduced another feature - support for animated GIFs - something that has been sadly missing from social media. Facebook doesn't support animated GIFs as yet, which gives marketers on Twitter one more trick up their sleeves.
Twitter timelines used to be woefully color-devoid up until only a few months ago when they finally decided to allow users to add images to tweets. A welcome change, no doubt. Taking one step further, Twitter has introduced another feature - support for animated GIFs - something that has been sadly absent from social media. Facebook doesn't support animated GIFs as yet, which gives marketers on Twitter one more trick up their sleeves.
You can view (and share) animated GIFs not only on the Twitter website, but also on Twitter's Android and iOS apps. The feature was announced by Twitter's support team (@Support) in a tweet.
The Tweet included an animated GIF as well. You can view it by clicking on the Tweet above.
Previously, if you wanted to share a GIF on Twitter, you had to upload it to a third-party (like Imgur) and then share the link. Starting today you can upload and view them directly on Twitter.
GIFs won’t animate automatically in your feed like they do on Tumblr, for example. When a GIF is shown there will be an overlay of a white play button, simply click on the GIF to play it right in your feed.
What this means for your business?
If you run a blog, or a small business, and advertise it through social media channels, then the ability to tweet animated GIFs presents new opportunities for you.
Animated GIFs stand out from the rest of the content just like images. But GIFs can do more than images can - GIFs stand out from the rest of the images as well. Twitter is no different. GIFs stand out in the Twitter feed just like images. Scientifically, moving things catch your attention much more quickly. Hence, these GIFs can capture the attention of your audience and communicate your message in a quick and easy way.
GIFs are like videos, but only shorter, smaller and lighter. If you have used videos to market your content, whether on your blog or on YouTube, then consider creating a short GIF that explains your business process(es), or come up with a whole new idea to gather your audience's attention.
GIFs can communicate emotions. If you have spent some time on Reddit, you know how GIFs can be used to convey the emotions behind a situation. It's much more difficult to capture an emotion in 140 characters. But animated GIFs with your tweets can now makes it easier than ever.
Adding a GIF to Twitter works just like uploading any other kind of image, so there’s nothing new to learn when it comes to using them.
Have you ever used a GIF to market your content? How was your experience, and how was the audience response? We'd love to hear from you. Cheers :)
