TikTok has proven to be something of a dark horse behind the scenes, however, growing around the world at an unprecedented rate until it's taken over social media and most of Gen Z's free time. Beware, Fake Windows 11 Installers are Spreading Malware

Microsoft's next OS, Windows 11, is all set to roll out later this year officially. However, the preview build is available for download to check the features of the operating system. Before the stable release, the scammers have already taken advantage and are spreading malware.

Hundreds of users have already downloaded the Windows 11 installers and are infected with malware. All these users have installed the installers from unofficial sources, according to Kaspersky security researchers.

Malicious Installers Bundled with Fake Windows Activators

According to the reports by Kaspersky, fake Windows 11 installers are doing rounds that are delivering adware malware. The hackers are offering Windows 11 installer links and promising them to be a Microsoft Insider testing ring that can access the upcoming OS.

Kaspersky said,

"Although Microsoft has made the process of downloading and installing Windows 11 from its official website fairly straightforward, many still visit other sources to download the software, which often contains unadvertised goodies from cybercriminals (and isn't necessarily Windows 11 at all)".

There is one malicious file called 86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + activator.exe. According to this file name, one can guess that it has Windows 11 build, and there is something that will automatically activate Windows for you.

The file is 1.75GB, and it looks like a normal installer, and there is a second installer that calls a download manager. If you accept the agreement, then you will get a bunch of malware.

This is just one example; there are so many other files available. Windows 11 is available for testing on the Dev channel, and it is malware-free. Microsoft has bumped up the system requirements for Windows 11, like Intel eighth-gen or AMD Zen 2 processor or newer. Because of this, the old PC users are looking for alternatives to install Windows 11 and are ending up with malware.

Malware can be from adware to a Trojan virus. Adware is not dangerous; it just injects your PC with advertisements. But viruses can create more issues, and they can be difficult to remove from the machine.

Two Former WhatsApp Employees Created This Private Relationship App

Two former WhatsApp employees have announced a private, ad-free social network called HalloApp, and the app bills itself as the "first real relationship network".

HalloApp is the brainchild of the earliest employees behind WhatsApp Neeraj Arora and Michael Donohue, who both worked at WhatsApp before and after Facebook acquired the messaging platform.

According to theVerge, Arora was WhatsApp's chief business officer until 2018 and a key figure in negotiating the Facebook deal. And Donohue was WhatsApp's engineering director for nearly nine years before he left Facebook in 2019.

HalloApp is a new category of an app – a digital space for people who you actually know and want to connect with. You use your phone number to connect with friends, family, and colleagues you're already connected to through your address book.

There are many similarities between HalloApp and WhatsApp: the app is designed for group or individual chats with close friends and family, the only way you can find people is by knowing their phone number, the messages are encrypted, and there are no ads.

The app is broken into four tabs, featuring four tabs at the bottom (home, groups, chats, settings), a shortcut to add a new post or images, and two icons at the top (one to invite contacts to the app and one for an activity/notification menu).

Announcing the launch on Twitter, he said – "Our vision at HalloApp is to build a simple, safe, private place for people to connect and share what matters — with the people who matter most."

The firm says it doesn't capture any "additional data" from your phone book though. In fact, the platform says it doesn't collect, store, or use any personal information. "More importantly, we will never show you ads. Ever. Instead, we plan to eventually offer additional features at a small cost," it adds.

Google has removed nine popular Android apps from Play Store after they were caught stealing Facebook login details. The apps were stealing users' data by using identical Javascript code.

All nine apps offered legal services and were downloaded more than 5.8 million times. Security researchers at Dr. Web have discovered these malicious apps and said they used a mechanism to trick the users to give their Facebook ID and passwords.

The apps attracted users to disable the in-app ads by adding their Facebook profiles. When the user links their FB account, they see a form asking to enter their Facebook username and password. The form looks genuine, so the users fall for it. Once they enter the credentials, the page is loaded into Android WebView, which was legitimate.

The researchers discovered that the hackers loaded malicious JavaScript in the same WebView, to steal the data.

The researchers at Dr. Web says,

"This script was directly used to highjack the entered login credentials. After that, this JavaScript, using the methods provided through the JavascriptInterface annotation, passed stolen login and password to the trojan applications, which then transferred the data to the attackers' C&C server. After the victim logged into their account, the trojans also stole cookies from the current authorization session. Those cookies were also sent to cybercriminals."

Five malware variants were identified in the apps. From which three of them were Android apps, and the other two used Google's Flutter framework. All of them are classified as same trojan because they have used similar configuration file formats and JavaScript code.

The apps that are now removed from Google Play Store are:

2. Processing Photo (500,000+ downloads)
3. Rubbish Cleaner (100,000+ downloads)
4. Inwell Fitness (100,000+ downloads)
5. Horoscope Daily (100,000+ downloads)
6. App Lock Keep (50,000+ downloads)
7. Lockit Master (5,000+ downloads)
8. Horoscope Pi (1,000 downloads)
9. App Lock manager (10 downloads)

All these apps are removed from the store and also banned the publishers of the apps, so they can't publish new apps. If you have installed any app from the list, uninstall them right now.
