Point and shoot cameras were a great alternative for people who didn't want a DSLR, but wanted a good camera for taking photos when they're on vacation. However, smartphones today have become so much better that they've essentially made the point and shoot camera an endangered species. Despite that, there are some point and shoot cameras that pack so much power that they still leave the smartphone behind. If you're looking for a tool that takes better photos than the best smartphones, here are some point and shoot cameras to consider.
CANON POWERSHOT G5 X
The Canon Powershot G5 X comes with a 20.2MP sensor, and while the megapixel count may be matched by some smartphones, the real advantage for the Canon is the far bigger 1-inch sensor that it sports. You get a 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 lens, which is not only versatile in terms of focal length, but also in terms of the aperture. The large f/1.8-2.8 aperture allows more light to enter the camera, making it a better performer in low light. Adding ease of use to the feature-set is the multi-angle touchscreen which allows you to take photos and videos in selfie mode just as easily. Also, with the new wireless connectivity feature, you can now transfer your pictures to your smartphone, tablet or laptop and instantly share on your social media platforms.
SONY CYBERSHOT DSC-RX100M3
The Sony RX100 popularised the use of the 1-inch sensor and the RX100 MarkIII continues the tradition. Featuring a 20.1MP 1.0-type Exmor R CMOS sensor, the Sony RX100 MarkIII also sports a versatile 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens. It comes with BIONZ X engine to offer sharp detail in images and reduce noise, when shooting in low light. The lens on the camera is made by Zeiss, assuring sharpness in the centre and the edges of the frame. Furthermore, it offers a dedicated mode that allows you to shoot at up to 10fps. The build quality of this camera is great and the extremely compact size makes it very easy to carry around in your pocket. You can tilt the LCD screen by 180 degrees, which gives you the option to shoot selfies while looking at the preview. The on-board Wi-Fi and NFC allow you to transfer the pictures to your smartphone in no time.
CANON POWERSHOT G9X MARK II
Here is a point and shoot camera from Canon that is quite compact, lightweight and packed with features. The Canon Powershot G9X Mark II comes with a 20.2MP BSI-CMOS sensor and has a DIGIC 7 image processor. It comes with 3x optical zoom lens that roughly gives you a focal distance of 24mm to 84mm. The aperture, however, starts at f/2.0 when shooting at the widest end, and goes all the way to f/6.3 at the telephoto end. At just 206gm, you have yourself an ultra-compact camera that you can carry around in your pocket. Be it a wedding reception party or an indoor event at your house, you can now click gorgeous pictures with this easy-to-use point and shoot camera.
CANON POWERSHOT G7 X MARK III
The Canon Powershot G7 X Mark III comes with 5x optical zoom, which is the equivalent of getting a focal length of 24-100mm. You get an aperture range of f/1.8-2.8, which makes it ideal for low-light photography. The lens also offers an impressive minimum focussing distance, making it a great choice for taking macro photos as well. Furthermore, you get a 3-inch LCD screen that is flexible enough to be rotated by 180 degrees, which makes your selfies much better. You can touch and capture pictures through this screen, giving you easy access to focussing your pictures before clicking them. The DIGIC 8 image processor is one of the highest quality processors that you can find in a point and shoot camera, which should deliver good image quality. It has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to use the Camera Connect app to control the camera apart from transferring files.
